Buffalo Sabres sign Tyler Myers to 7 year extension worth $38.5 million -NHL offseason Update
Something that everyone knew that would happen, which was just a matter of time, was the contract extension of Buffalo Sabres rookie sensation, defenseman Tyler Myers, who was signed on to a monstrous seven-year, $38. 5 million deal on Thursday, September
15, 2011.
Pennsylvanian billionaire, Terry Pegula, who had taken over the teams’ ownership before the 2010-2011 National Hockey League (NHL) regular season ended, was approached a number of times on what would be happening to the 21-year-old defender. It was clear
that his reaction was not in any way different from what he had reassured them of, and that was Tyler Myers would not be going anywhere.
According to Sabres general manager, Darcy Regier, while addressing a news conference Thursday, the negotiation process took only two weeks, unlike other recently signed players who had to fight for a signing.
"You want to avoid contentious negotiations, and create a relationship that is a win-win situation", Regier said. "We wanted to recognize Tyler for his abilities now, and in the future".
Hailing from Houston, Texas, United States, Myers was drafted by Buffalo Sabres as they used their 12th overall selection, during round-one of the 2008 NHL Entry Draft. Since then, he has been putting up big numbers for the now revolutionised
team, something that they would obviously not want to lose entering their most anticipated season.
For some, the contract might sound a little too outrageous for the young player, but looking at his Calder Cup winning performance during the 2009-2010 season and leading the team to their second straight playoff appearance last postseason, Sabres wanted
to recognise him for that.
Tyler Myers knew that he would be getting it sooner or later but is certainly relieved to have gotten it done.
“I am very grateful that (general manager) Darcy (Regier) and the Sabres initiated discussions one year early, and showed the confidence in making it a long term deal”, said Myers. "It’s what I wanted ever since I came in two years ago, I’ve wanted to be
a Sabre for a long time".
With an overall team change, Myers hopes that he can continue growing with a team that has given him much more then he previously hoped for.
