Buffalo Sabres wins 4-2 against the Ottawa Senators at their home arena closing the gap on Carolina Hurricanes
Buffalo Sabres hosted the Ottawa Senators at the HSBC Arena this past Friday. The game was very important for the Sabres as they were looking to cut the gap between the Hurricanes who are the in the final play-off position in the Eastern Conference.
Both the teams were pretty much even during the course of 60 minutes of play. However, the Sabres were the more productive of the two teams who managed to win the game 4-2 in the end. Cody McCormick, centre of the Sabres was named the star selection of the
game as he scored a goal and made an assist.
The Sabres were quick out of the blocks as they came up with a few shots on goal early on. However, the Senators were able to match them in terms of play making early on. Unfortunately, they couldn’t do it for too long and the Sabres took the lead with a
brilliant goal scored by Michael Grier from a superb backhand shot in the 7th minute.
The Senators came up with a stronger than expected performance so they failing to score wasn’t a big issue. On the other hand, the Sabres continued to pile pressure on the away defence but they couldn’t find the back of the net. This remained the case for
the rest of the period as Sabres led 1-0 going into the break.
During the course of the period, the Sabres made 10 goal attempts while the Senators came up with 8 goal attempt. The Sabres led 1-0 as the teams went into the break.
Both teams made a decent start to the second period. Though they were slow out of the blocks but they got better with the passage of time. Both teams were looking very threatening while on the offence and it was the Sabres who scored the first goal of the
period.
The goal was scored by Cody McCormick in the 10th minute to double the Sabres lead. The Senators were determined to score and coming up with some brilliant plays. Consequently, the away side scored in the 15th minute through Jason Spezza’s
backhand shot to trail by a single goal.
The period ended with the Sabres leading 2-1 as they made 11 goal attempts in the period while the Senators made 18 goal attempts.
The final 20 minutes of play saw both teams evenly matched as they made 12 goal attempts each with the Sabres piling on the early pressure.
The Sabres scored in the 8th minute through Jochen Hecht from a flick shot to double their lead. Both teams moved on with the period moving on swiftly. However, the Senators scored in the 19th minute through Milan Michalek and were
hopeful of a comeback.
However, the Sabres scored in the final minute through Thomas Vanek to win the game 4-2 in the end. The final period saw both teams coming up with 12 goal attempts each but the Senators fell short and lost the game.
