As far as I can tell, Buffy dropped her ring on the floor where he 'died' and somehow that caused him to be brought back. Really, I don't understand...

she dropped the claddagah ring on the floor where angel died and then he just came back, no real explanation in the episode.

It was never answered completely on either show; for years after it happened, Angel seemed to believe it was The Powers That Be, the mysterious overseeing deities who guided him for most of his own series. However, two other entities have claimed responsibility.

In the episode "Amends" (Buffy, season 3) the First claimed credit for bringing him back, supposedly to get him to turn evil again and kill Buffy; however, given that it was happy to let him die at the end of the episode, it was likely lying.

In Angel Season 4, Jasmine (a fallen deity) claims that she was responsible, arranging for him to be brought back so that he could set events into motion that would allow her to be reborn on Earth (specifically, Angel's son was her father) - given that most of what Jasmine said was untrue, however, it's unknown whether she was telling the truth here.

It's never really explained, but I supposed it had something to do with that fact that Buffy dropped the claddagh ring that Angel had given her on the ground where she had stabbed him and "her love" brought him back.
