Bug Question...red ant?

Giant(inch long) bright red fuzzy ant/wasp without wings. EVIL!!! looking ....any ideas what it is?

Cow killer or  velvet ant ( 2 names for the same thing) It is a kind of wasp.

Be careful, they have a painful stinger

Their bodies are really hard so they're difficult to kill, and they're poisonous. Not enough to kill you or anything, but you might end up in the hospital. Nasty things.
