ok this site here as lots to do with weta, and Jerusalem cricket.. if you scroll down until you see a black potato bug..... it looks very different aside from color. The shape it's body and instead of having a flat neck like, they have a roundish bumpy one..

http://www.whatsthatbug.com/potato.html

it says mexican potato bug.. but i only found one picture on yahoo that lead to the same site as this one in which is the same exact picture (so that don't count)

therefore i don't think it's named Mexican potato bug it could have another name or it's an unknown species that the person who replied to the person who sent the picture probably didn't' realize that.. cause he/she said it was a potato bug/Jerusalem cricket.. and judging by the photo, it' looks nothing like it, and the fact it's black.

  1. You are using common names. Animals including insects frequently have several common names and common names often are given to more than one animal, in different places.

  2. Jerusalem crickets are also often called potato bugs or alternatively the old bald-headed man.

Jerusalem crickets (genus Stenopelmatus) are a group of large, flightless insects native to western United States, along the Pacific Coast, and south into Mexico. Because of their large, human-like head, they are commonly called niño de la tierra (Spanish for "child of the earth"), Earth baby, cara de niño (Spanish for "child's face"), or wó see ts'inii (Navajo for "skull insect"). They are also often called potato bugs or alternatively the old bald-headed man.
