Question:

Bug question and treatment

As disgusting as this is, I have no clue what these bugs are and how to treat them.. soooo bear with the description.

They are only on my john mules * males* and only on their sheaths. The molly isn't affected at all.

They have small black heads and then a see through body that holds blood and you can see the blood in them. All in all, they are only about 1 centimeter long at the most.

The WIPE original I use, kills them on contact, but there are always more the next day.

Are they lice? Larvae? Do I dust for lice on the sheath?

All I am doing now is just the WIPE, but not sure what else for these things?

  1. They sound more like ticks, since you can see the blood through the body.  Ticks do tend to like the sheath area.  There are products made for killing ticks, and it's important that you are careful not to rupture the body and expose yourself to the various diseases they can carry.

Use a tool to scrape some into a baggie and show them to the vet, or look up ticks and compare any photos you find.  Good luck....not the fun side of owning horses, for sure!

And in case you haven't already heard enough on maggots, they are actually wonderful for cleaning up infections and even secrete a substance that helps healthy tissue to be maintained while they clean up a wound...they are still used in medicine today to debride dead tissue and infective agents.

So, your mule's ear was probably better off for having had them there.

  5. I'm going to go with Kicking Bear this time, I don't mind saying, "Mmmmaggots", it's the most logical answer.  Ever remember doctoring a calf's navel with that thick white stuff with a dobber out of the bottle and it made them just boil out of the navel and already be dead when they hit the ground?  Actually, I always thought that maggots only ate dead tissue and wouldn't go past it, because back in the old days, they used to use maggots to clear out decaying flesh in a wound (yes, in humans as well)...going to quit on that one.

  6. Not an answer...just a comment...or two...

    **edit...R, yeah...I'm done too...

**edit...I am curious about this.  I always thought that maggots only ate dead tissue also...

**EDIT...what happened to Kicking Bear?  I've noticed his answers disappearing.  Is it a troll being a COMPLETE moron??  His answers are intelligent and well informed!!
