I was thinking of getting the bamboo bugei katana and was thinking it would be best used for display then for cutting. i want to make sure that i am right before purchasing it. Also if i did need to use it to cut something, could it do the job properly?

  1. If it's sharp it'll cut.

Typically they will call a blade "functional" if it will actualy cut, otherwise the edge is not sharp, not able to be sharpened, and it's meant as a wall hanger, like those 'highlander swords'.

  2. I would be cautious (about using it for 'cutting') because unless it has been specifically made for tameshigiri (the Japanese art of target test cutting, e.g. wara (rice straw), goza (the top layer of tatami mats), bamboo, and thin steel sheets) the manufacturer would state that it  (the sword) has been made specifically for that purpose.

It is a simple matter of your safety and well-being.   I suggest that you e-mail the company and check whether the katana is suitable for tameshigiri.

  3. Bugei swords are fully functional.  They are designed tor tameshigiri, or test cutting.

The traditional target is a grass mat that has been soaked in water and allowed to drain.  Sometimes there is a green bamboo in the center of the mat for experienced students.

There are videos of test cutting on Bugei's site, and elsewhere.

Cutting with a sharp sword is quite dangerous.  I strongly urge you to get competent instruction before attempting to cut.  A sword is made for killing, after all, and it can cause horrific damage if mishandled.

  4. You can use it but I would suggest a cheaper sword if you are a beginner as you could bend the metal if you perform incorrectly. Just a recommendation since their swords are rather expensive.
