  1. Actually that is EXACTLY what I want to do! Didn't realize that Wal-Mart still sold guns and that is an AWESOME price for a new 700 in 308.

The only thing I want differently for mine is a nice Bell&Carlson thumbhole, but basically the same.

Great thing about the 700 is the flexibility they have. Great guns, even right out of the box. Congrats!

To add on: Harris makes an awesome product. Plus they are made in the USA. As for scope, don't know enough to advise, but never scrimp on scopes. Good optics often cost more than the gun itself... Just food for thought!

  2. I love my own 700 and have had it since 1974 when I bought it new for under $120.  I've often thought of changing the stock, or adding a recoil pad or getting the set push-to-pull trigger but I'm afraid to mess with it since it is such a great shooter right out of the box.

Interestingly enough this year I've been obsessed with replacing my old 3x9 scope and having that very Zeiss 3x9x40 (the Conquest) scope installed that's in your link.  Mine is the 700 ADL in .25-06 Remington.  It didn't come with a recoil pad so I might have one put in too so it'll be quieter when I rest it on the floor of a deer blind.  I might ask about the set trigger too.

  3. I really like what you have picked out. I would suggest a Harris bipod. And if you want to get a Sightron scope (which by the way are my favorite) then you will more than likely want to go with a 3-12x42. I have a .308 set up like that and love it. But the thing is, I have only seen Sightron scopes online for about $520 (including shipping). But you do not need to get holes drilled and tapped seeing as how Leupold makes a number of bases for a Remington short action model 700. Go have a look at midwayusa.com, they have all kinds of accessories like you want.

  4. Sounds like you know what you want, and yes that is bad arce gun.

I have had 2 rifles built in the past. The first was an old .308 hunting rifle I had(a Remington 700), the other is a 30-06, also on a 700.

What I did was send my gun to Pac-Nor barrels.

They took my receiver, started with a 27.5 inch polygonal rifling barrel on it. The tube has a 1 in 10 twist, .800th at the target crown, with a 3 inch shank, and 6 deep flutes to the straight taper.

Then they trued the bolt, and lead lapped all the parts to slick it out.

Add a schilling trigger set to 2 pounds, and a remington 4 shot box magazine. Then the gun was then mounted in a composite HS precision stock, and a shooter was born.

I glassed the gun with a Leupold 4.5x14 long range tactical with a mil dot ret; and it sits in a Harris BI-Pod.

Ok the entire project was hastle free; the boys at Pac-Nor are friendly, and real pro's. It was 2 months and cost 1300 without the original cost of the rifle and the scope.

What I ended up with is a rifle that will consistantly place match grade ammo in a 1 inch or less group at 200 meters, and about .5 at 100 meters. It has a polygonal rifeling, thus the bullets get less deformation, a better seal, and fly an extra 100 to 150 fps faster than a button rifled barrel, the same length. The barrel also is so stable due to the flutes, that even if I load and rapidly shoot all three of my magazines, the barrel will not walk rounds. In fact, with the assistance of a friend, reloading the mags, I shot 20 rounds rapidly, and had no change in group. The 1 in 10 twist will stabilize 190 grain cor-bon match rounds like a 168 in most sub-moa guns; and it puts the rounds out at just a bit under 2800 fps average.(2765 fps to be exact.)

Remington makes your gun to stabilize bullets from 125 grains to about 168 grains. I believe the rate of twist is 1 in 12. The gun is out of the box perfect, and I would not do a d**n thing to it.

If you really want a custom gun, go find an old 700 from a pawn shop. It don't need to look pretty, cause you will be keeping just the reciever. If you find a short action, you could make it a .308, or any short action rifle you with, with exception of the short mags. If you find a long action, you can make it a 30-06, or any othe long action caliber, and again no mags.

The cost of the gun may run about 200, and the rifle can be complete for another 1000; I have a few bells that most don't need. If you buy the gun new, you will spend money on a trigger job($100), a stock($250 to $500),and truing the bolt($125). And the barrel, and caliber is exactly what you want for your mission specific purpose.

I like my 4.5x14 scope, but let me tell you that 4.5 power is too powerfull for some short range shots(50 meters), on moving targets(deer and other critters). I suggest that you consider a scope that has a minimum power of no more that 3, and has at least a 10 power max. Nightforce will give you a 3 to 15 power range, and is truly a quality scope.

I think whatever you decide, don't skimp. I waited a few extra years to build exactly what I wanted in a precision rifle, and what I ended up with shoots circles around any factory Remington, and I am a huge fan of Remington.

Good luck and look into Black Hills Ammo for standard velocity .308 ammo. They are the best out there.

  5. Sounds good but why D&T barrel and mount Fire Sights when a scope will block you from using the sights?

I'm not a thumbhole stock fan. If the Remington stock was unsuitable I would go for H.S. Precision, McMillan or B&C. I also have several Harris swivel bi-pods they work great.

Leupold VXII, 4-12x40 Long Range Duplex reticle about $400.
