"schedule 40 steel pipe", about 1.5" diameter, is what u r looking for.  They can be threaded at the end for flanges, by your local plumbing store. If you are fortunate enough to find brass, go for it. Do not get "tubing" unless it's from a legitimate steel supply house. Otherwise it might be weak junk.
