So i decided to try and build my own computer. I sort of know what I'm doing, but mostly assuming that it is right. I know I have all of my parts in the right place, and I'm almost positive everything is in good. Now I have to wire everything up, and I am clueless. I basically just tried to put things where they fit. So I hooked everything up, and the computer doesn't start up. Half of the wires aren't hooked up to anything because I couldn't find anywhere to plug them in. Any pointers or suggestions? anything i should check?

  1. check seems like you might have forgot to connect your 4-pin atx power plug

  2. This will help ya http://www.pcmech.com/byopc/

  3. Check the manual that came with the motherboard you purchased.  They usually give you step by step instructions on the important connections you need to have to get the computer running.  For example: the wires running from the power/reset button and LEDs.  They all need to be connected to jumpers on the motherboard.

It should all be covered in the manual.  Without telling us exactly where you are or showing us pictures of what is left, we can't really be enough help.  "Half of the wires aren't hooked up to anything..." doesn't tell us what wires aren't connected.

  4. read the mother board manual. You will most probably find that you have not connected the power switch cabels in the right places to the MB.

Everything else is uaully straight forward...Hard drive slots are IDE or SaTA so you cant go wrong there, have you put the processor in the right way, is the memory the right way. Just a few things to check but the most probable issue is the cables from the case to the MB
