Ok I'm building a pc and I think I'm just about done. I'm planning on using linux ubuntu as my initial os and I'm not sure how my first bootup will go. Can someone ru me through how it's gonna happen? It's a completely blank new 750gb hard drive and I really just don't know what to do for the first bootup.

  1. Sounds like you are a newbie to Ubuntu and Linux altogether. Might be a good idea to download the Ubuntu Live CD and experiment with that. The Live CD allows you to boot on any computer, even with Windows installed, and run Ubuntu without modifying your Windows install. You can even boot to your new computer with a blank hard drive. After using the Live CD you will still be left with your blank hard drive.

  2. If everything is working. you set the BIOS to boot from CD, just boot and get the Ubuntu Screen. On the screen is an icon labled "Install" just click it and follow the steps. It really is that easy.

  3. All you have to do is put your Ubuntu disc in the drive when you turn it on. The installation process is pretty self-explanatory, as well. If, for some reason, you get stuck during installation, Google for the answer to your problem in the Ubuntu live CD. Good luck with your new system!

  4. hi, if you have a 'live' version of linux then there will be an install option and this will take care of all you need.

if an older version of linux then it can be a pain to set up.

i would advise you to search for a 'live' ISO you can burn to cd then you have a ready made disk when needed.

i would also advise splitting the hard drive, something that size will take an eon to scan.

also, for all its good points, remember linux does not have the same software/hardware support that microsoft enjoy so depending on what hardware you have you may find some problems, dont rule out the obvious....a simple driver update could sort a lot.
