I have a 14 foot open span that I will be building a wall on to close it up. It is upstairs and there is wood sub floor. I am going to put 6 foot wide double doors in the middle which leaves me with 4 feet of wall on each side. I know the "right" way would be to cut the carpet back cut and mount to the actual floor. But is there harm in installing it on top with three inch screws? What's your experience with this situation?

  1. our house, for whatever reason, had two living rooms on the main floor. We put up a wall & door on one of them to make a needed 4th bedroom. we built it on top of the carpet and had no problems at all.

  2. Building on top is not a problem until you want to or need to change the carpet.

Take the time to remove the piece of carpet. Don't do a half-fast job.

  3. Its' a bit Mickey Mouse. You can do it, though. It saves having to add more carpet strips is all.

  4. If the wall is to be permanent, I would take the time to do it right.
