Question:

Building a timber decking

I am planning to construct a timber deck in my back garden. I intend placing bearers on concrete pavers as the ground is fairly solid. I am then going to s***w the decking timber directly to the bearers (i.e. no joists).

Question is what size bearers should I be using?

I will be using treated pine and I am thinking 90mm x 35mm but someone mentioned I should be using at least 45mm thick?

Any thoughts, tips or advice?

  1. you need to give me more info,,,,i am a carpenter and specialise in decks and pergolas,,,send me more  details,,,ill be happy to help,,then i can advise you on the best approach....your profile does not allow me to e-mail u....u have to e-mail me,,,90 x 90mm bearer will span (softwood)1500mm,,,,joists 90x45 will span to 1800mm,,,140 x 45mm span to 2400mm...190 x 45mm ...around 3600mm....these are for treated pine,,,multi spans or hardwoods will span further....joists should be spaced at 450mm centres....spacing of at least 4mm between the boards for a deck that is under cover...or at least 6mm for a deck exposed to the elements....

  2. Don't !!!!!!!!!!!

Please think again ask for some advise( most large hardware stores will give it) , get some plans, it's not as easy as it looks

It's a mistake to only use a joist set up it's difficult to level the deck and movement will happen .It's also necessary to anchor the deck down sitting on top of paver's won't do

sadly there's no short cuts do it right do it once

  3. Most are 4x4
