Question:

Building a wood snare?

Alright so I'm in my woods class at school. Well for our last project we get to build whatever we want. Well I'm a dedicated drummer and you know I want to build something drum related. So I am thinking a snare drum. Anyone know if this would even work to sound good? If so what kind of wood and dimensions should I use for building my snare? I could get all the rims, screws, ect. at a local music store. So if you or anyone you know has built their own snare please give me some helpful tips.

Thanks!

  1. I would speak to the people at the music store, as well as supplying the materials you will need, they will probably be able to give you the specifications for building it.

  2. It's going to be really complicated to build a wooden drum shell. They sell keller shells on the internet and on eBay if you wanted a shell but it will be almost impossible to get a perfectly round wooden shell.

If you want to try anyway, use anything from Ash, Oak, Maple, Birch, Mahogony ect. Dimensions make 14" or 13" or 12" diameter with either a 5" or 6.5" depth.

    Hope this helps!
