  1. While there are many sources for mahogany and ebony and as many different prices I would suggest that you buy from a company that mills wood specifically for instrument building. Two sources I use are Grizzly Industrial (grizzly.com) and Stewart McDonald (stewmac.com). They sell spruce tops and back and side wood sets in various hardwood species milled to the appropriate thickness. You can buy a mahogany back and side set from StewMac for $57.54 or with pre-bent sides for $99.92. I would also recommend Stewart McDonald for fretboard ebony. They sell ebony blanks uncut or with the fret slots pre-cut (highly recommended) for $31.62. You also need top wood $20 - $90 depending on grade. A neck blank will run about $75.00 raw and $115.00 pre- machined. You  will also need bracing stock, kerfing material, a bridge blank, neck and tail blocks, truss rod, nut and saddle blanks, bridge and end pins, fret wire, rosette and peghead overlay (optional) and tuners. As you can see this list will add up to an amount you could buy a new guitar with. And add to this the fact that there is no guarantee it will turn out right. But don't be discouraged. What I would recommend is that you start with a kit. Stew Mac sells a kit for under $400 that includes everything mentioned above except tuners and also includes plans and an instructional DVD. Check it out. I have seen guitars built with these kits and built with care they can turn out to be very good guitars. Good luck and have fun.
