OK I put everything together like its suppose to an im sure of this. its my first build however... i didn't put the CPU cooler in because it hasn't arrived from newegg yet but i tried to turn it on an it wont turn on. Is there like a safety feature or something that makes it not turn on when there's no CPU cooler?

  1. Not sure about a safety feature, but you should never turn on your pc without a cpu cooler

  2. The PC will work without a heat sink

It just wont work for long ;)

Check your cabling again is my advice, and wait for the heat sink to arrive. Only turn it on to test it out.

    Hope this helps :)

  3. On most computers, yes, there must be heat sink contact and the fan must be running for it to turn on.

Just a few seconds of uncooled running would fry your processor and usually the motherboard too, so consider yourself lucky.

  4. DON'T TURN IT ON without the cpu cooler! An Intel cpu can take this for a little bit,(I wouldn't even try it though!), an AMD will burn up in less than a minute!  To tell you the truth,(I do, this is just a saying!), I don't know if a processor won't turn on unless you have the heatsink/fan combo on it.

I install processors that run from $130 bucks to $1015 bucks, and I don't want to BURN ONE UP to find out! I do know, there's a safety feature that turns a cpu off if it gets too hot. If the BIOS program doesn't read a certain amount of ground source, it turns the cpu off.  Did you buy thermal paste? Ya gotta' have thermal paste! Some processors come with a thermal pad attached to them. These are c**p. (The thermal pad) Thermal paste fills in the microscopic imperfections on the top of the cpu case, and the bottom of the heatsink. If these voids are left without thermal paste, there will be air gaps. The voids will be air pockets. Air is an insulator, not a conductor. You need something to conduct the heat AWAY from the processor to the heatsink. You have to use care when applying thermal paste. You also have to use care when installing the heatsink.

Some heatsink's have a plate that goes on the bottom of the motherboard. It is for this reason that the cpu and heatsink are installed first, before installing the motherboard on the support plate.

(I always install the ram too, as you can get your fingers under the motherboard to support it. Some ram is pretty stubborn when it's new, and the slots are new. Never had ram installed before.)

Hope you observed the DE-static rules and touched the metal frame of the computer case, before you touched any parts! Static makes computer parts go POOF! So does working on a bed, a couch, or on a carpet floor! STATIC!
