Hey everyone

Doe anyone know what buildings would be on a moderate to small sized ranch in the American west?

Like house, stable, barn, etc?

What buildings, and what would each building's purpose be??

Cheers,

  1. If you are talking about a simple Ranch (just raising animals and not crops) then you might find a house (for the rancher and family to live in) and a barn (used for feed storage).  You could also find a Silo (used for feed storage), a shop (used for storing tools and an inside/sheltered workplace it is also used for storing stuff as most farmers are sort of packrats because "You never know when that ___ might either be used or come in handy"), sheds (used for vehicle and or equipment storage.)  If they also raise crops then there will be some heavy equipment around the farm.  Some might be stored in sheds and some might be stored outside.  An elevator could be used for grain storage.

  2. last ranch i worked at we had a number of buildings, the owwners house, the managers house two houses for hired hands a medicine house a show barn a machine shed at least 8 haybarns a repair shop, at least 15 sheds for cattle a calf shed a nurse shed for sick cattle a shed for our nurse cows a smoke house for hanging sausage several tool sheds behind my house a huge tractor barn and at least 15 small buildings situated in different parts of the ranch for other things, and this ranch was only about 2000 acres in size what i would call a moderate size texas ranch

  3. All depends

  4. All depends, if it's a row crop farm, machine shed for storing equipment, shop for repair, possibaly a fuel-oil shed for storing oil, grease, etc, possibaly a pesticide shed where pesticides can be stored safely, grain bins for storing grain.

If a cattle operation, probably something used for sheltering animals, but not necessarily.  Likely a shop for repairing machinery, grain bins for storing grain, may have a working shed for working animals (vaccinating, worming, ear tagging, etc).  If sheep, livestock shelter, lambing barn, working barn or facilities in another barn, if in wetter areas, hay barn, shop.
