Buitendag and Moore make the quarter-finals cut at Vans US Open of Surfing – Surfing news
South Africa’s Bianca Buitendag and Hawaii’s Carissa Moore secured their place in the quarter-finals at the Vans US Open of Surfing, stop no.6 of 8 on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Women’s World Championship Tour, after claiming top
honours in their respective Round 4 heats that went down at the Huntington Beach Pier in California, America, on Friday, July 26, 2013.
Buitendag earned her place in the next stage of the competition by getting the better of Brazil’s Silvana Lima in the second heat of Round 4, whereas Moore download America’s Lakey Peterson in the third heat to advance into the quarter-finals.
Peaky two-to-four foot waves greeted the top female surfers from around the globe on the latest day of the competition, giving them an ideal stage to push hard for survival in their Round 4 battles.
After failing to clinch success in their Round 3 heats, both Buitendag and Lima were determined to make amends in their Round 4 heat, which had them pitted against each other.
As the heat got underway, Buitendag got off to a solid start and soon posted a 6.67 on the scoreboard to get an upper-hand over her rival.  She went on to back it up with a 5.87-point ride, thus moving to a heat-total of 12.54 points.
Lima put on a determined fight, but eventually had to settle for a heat-total of 11.10 points, thus getting forced to surrender victory and consequently the quarter-final spot to her rival.
The third heat saw Moore, former ASP Women’s World Champion and US Open winner, taking on Peterson, defending event champion, in a battle for survival.
The 20-year-old Hawaiian collected a couple of rides in the seven-point range to finish with a heat-total of 14.74 points. Her score remained unbeatable as Peterson concluded the heat on a two-wave total of 13.87 points.
“Lakey is a fighter and I have a lot of respect for her,” Moore said. “She surfs so well in beachbreaks and goes for it and she’s not someone I wanted to draw in Round 4. I didn’t feel like I surfed my best, but was able to squeak by and got lucky. I’m happy
to get through that one.”
With her Round 4 success, Moore moved one step closer to getting the lead from Australia’s Tyler Wright in this year’s race for the coveted World Title.
