Bukit Jalil National Aquatic Centre risking diver’s safety due to poor conditions - Swimming News
The National Aquatic Centre in Malaysia has been a threat to their national divers, as they have failed to maintain the satisfactory level of their diving standards.
These unsatisfactory diving facilities at the Aquatic Centre in Bukit Jalil are highly likely to pose a safety threat to their excellent divers.
The floor covering on the springboards and the diving platforms are broken at the National Aquatic Centre. The condition of the covers has been getting worse over the past few years and no action is taken against the matter.
Malaysia has been famous for producing world-renowned divers. Their divers have reached the podium for medals at the World Championships, Commonwealth Games and the Asian Games. This accomplishment has been considered significant, as they have started taking
interest in diving, just a decade ago. This achievement is also a result of Chinese Coaches, who have been rendering their services to their national athletes from a long time, but now they face a real obstacle in placing their athletes on the podium at different
world levels.
Coach to the national diving team, Yang Zhuliang has raised the concern about the issue and said, “We try to make do the best way we can but I sometimes wonder how our divers can still deliver medals in major meets. I had to tape the edges together to prevent
any unnecessary incident to our divers during training, especially on the platform.”
In addition, the secretary to the Amateur Swimming Union of Malaysia, Edwin Chong said that the 10m diving platforms do not meet the international standard.
Edwin said, “The platforms are five metres apart when they cannot be more than three metres, according to international rules. Our divers face difficulties getting their synchronisation right and that is why we have not hosted any international diving meets
after the Commonwealth Games.”
Chong stressed that they have presented the matter to the committee but are still waiting for their response. Furthermore, he said that to enhance the standard of sport in Malaysia and to earn the bid of international events, it is necessary to install required
diving platforms.
