Bulgaria defeats Egypt to meet Tunisia for 13th spot: FIVB Men´s Junior World Championship
The Bulgarian and the Egyptian team were competing against each other in the final round of the FIVB Men´s Junior World Championship that is being played in Brazil. The two teams faced each other at the Caio Martins gymnasium, Niteroi on the August 8th.
What followed was a competition that was swept away by the Bulgarians, who will now be competing with the Tunisians to decide the 13th position holder in the tournament while the Egyptians have the Puerto Ricans in store for them for at the 15th
slot match.
Even though the Egyptians lost the match in three consecutive sets, they put up a valiant effort. The opening set of the game was tight all thorough but the Bulgarians put on a spurt of speed in the end that took them to a first set win. In the second and
the third sets, the Egyptians lost some steam that resulted in a slow down in performance of which the Bulgarians took advantage. The second and the third sets were also secured by the Bulgarians, giving them a match win at the following set scores: 25-22,
25-19 and 25-19.
The Bulgarian coach, Nikolay Jeliazkov, expressed his sentiments in the following manner at the press conference after the match: “We respected Egypt. But we also played well. Today the key was the serve and we served really well. Our blocks and attacks
were OK. We made fewer mistakes than yesterday. We want to finish this competition with a victory over Tunisia."
Whereas the Egyptian coach, Mohamed Ellakany, made the following statements regarding the outcome of the match: “Our team didn´t play well tonight. We've played two five-set matches in the last two days. In the first set, they were focused until it was 9-7
Egypt. Bulgaria team had a good block. We lost many receptions. It´s very difficult to play eight matches in 10 days.”
The start of the first set of the game was intense and it remained tight for the most part. The teams were locked in a tie at 19-19 but the Bulgarians managed to pull up ahead at 21-19. The Egyptian side decided to call for a time out in an effort to upset
the building momentum of the Bulgarians but it did not have the desired effect as Bulgaria was able to bag a win at 25-22.
The second set reached a tie earlier than the first one with the score board showing an equal score at 7-7. Bulgaria managed to push forward again and take the lead at 9-7. The Egyptians got close at 15-14 but could not over take their rivals and the Bulgarians
cruised towards another win at 25-19.
The Egyptians started the third set with determination and had the score tied at 7-7 but they could not hold for too long and gave the advantage to the Bulgarians who did not have a hard time in securing a win at 25-19.
Jani Jeliazkov of Bulgaria and Omar Hassan of Egypt both tallied the highest points at 12 each.
