Bulgaria defeats Germany 3-1 in a World League Finals match – Volleyball news
The second match of the first day of the FIVB World League Finals was held between Bulgaria and Germany on Wednesday, July 4, 2012. The final round of the tournament is being hosted by Sofia, Bulgaria while the matches are being staged at the Arena Armeec.
The home team was able to start of the final round on a winning note as it handed out a defeat to Germany by 3-1 in front of 12,300 fans.
Bulgaria took two hours and eight minutes to seal the deal on Germany at the following final set scores: 26-28, 25-19, 29-27 and 25-19.
The coach of the home team, Nayden Naydenov, shared his happiness at the win by making the following comments, “I cannot hide the fact that I am really happy because the team played as one in the hard and most decisive moments...We have managed to win against
Germany in a situation when there is no second chance.”
On the other hand, the coach of Germany, Vital Heynen, expressed his sentiments by giving the following statements, “Of course, we are disappointed, but the Bulgarians deserved the victory...However, we are happy to be here and to participate into the Final
Round. We are still learning and we hope will get better and better while preparing for the Olympics.”
The player who scored the highest number of points in the match was Todor Aleksiev of Bulgaria as he kept the challenge up by tallying a score of 23. On the other hand, the highest scorer on the German side was Gyorgy Grozer who added 16 points for his team.
The opening set of the match started off with a lead by the home team and they were able to stretch the advantage while the Germans trailed behind. However, Germany did not let Bulgaria get too far and was able to make the set reach a tie. After that point,
the set went competitive as both the sides fought to maintain their dominance. Eventually Germany succeeded in bagging the first set of the game at 28-26.
The home team rallied together in the second set and came out strong in their attack which helped them to take the lead and extend it. The Germans tried to close in the gap but Bulgaria was able to speed up to make the match reach a tie by securing the second
set at 25-19.
The Germans responded to the loss of the second set by coming out forcefully in the third set but the Bulgarian defence was holding strong. Both the teams fought hard for the win but the home team was able to hit the final point and grab the third set at
29-27.
The fourth set of the match was filled with strong attacks from the home team that left the Germans almost defenceless. It was only a matter of time before Bulgaria was able to secure the fourth set at 25-19.
