Bulgaria sweeps Greece in second round of FIVB Boy’s Youth World Championship
The Bulgarians took on the Greeks on August 25th in a FIVB Boy’s Youth World Championship in Bahia Blanca, Argentina. The resulting competition did not take more than three sets to reach its close at the end of which the Bulgarians were celebrating
their hard earned win.
Despite the fact that the Greeks lost the match to Bulgaria in a clean sweep, they did not go down without putting up a good fight. The first set of the match was competitive with no one sure where the tables would turn until the very end. After Bulgaria
won the first set, they started the second one with increased confidence while the performance of the Greeks experienced a slight downturn. The Greeks started the third set with determination to swing things in their favour but they were not successful in
getting a single win as Bulgaria won the match at the following final set scores: 25-23, 25-19 and 25-21.
The coach of the Bulgarian team, Miroslav Zhivkov, made the following comments at the press conference after the match had been won by his team: "Before the match we knew that the Greece team was difficult so it would be a tough contest. We won the match
because we improved our attitude. We will continue preparing for the match with France.”
On the other hand, the Greek coach, Ioakeim Dimitriadis, shared his views by making these statements: “Congratulation to Team Bulgaria. It is a tough team with a lot of history. They won because of the blocks and our unforced errors. The players are improving
their game and that’s the key for their future success.”
The Greeks took the lead at the start of the first set at 8-4 only to give it away to Bulgaria at the second technical time out at 16-14. The match remained close afterwards but the Bulgarians managed to pull up ahead in the end by bagging a win at 25-23.
The momentum generated by winning the first set of the game got the Bulgarians going in the second set as well. They grabbed a lead at 8-5 and stuck with it till the end even though the Greeks tried to overtake their opponents. The Bulgarians won the second
set at 25-19.
The Greeks were leading both the first as well as the second technical time out at 8-4 and 16-13 respectively but the Bulgarians slowly and steadily gained on their opponents and won the set at 25-21.
The recent win has enabled the Bulgarians to earn three points in Pool F.
The top scorer among both teams was the Greek player, Georgios Tzioumakas, with 22 points while the Bulgarian player Ivan Ivanov scored the highest points in his team by scoring 10 points.
