Question:

Bulgarian traditions for a baby?

Hi, my neighbors just came round to give me a slice of bread to celebrate their young sons first steps. They told me this is a Bulgarian tradition to give bread when a child first starts to walk.

This was very nice of them, my question is: is there anything i can do give to them to celebrate this occasion, traditionally?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  1. Well, I don't think you *have to* give them something by tradition, but it would be nice of you if you offer them some sort of chocolates and maybe a bottle of wine or something. Maybe a pair of baby shoes as a present would be sweet :)

Oh, and if you want to congratulate them on the occasion in Bulgarian, say:

"Chestito za purvite stupki na sina vi" which means "Congartulations on you son's first steps"

or just "Chestito!" will do :)

  2. Bulgarians eat babies.  The correct thing to do is grill your own baby and serve it to them on the same piece of bread.  Otherwise move home.
