Bulls’ utility forward Derick Kuün has announced his immediate retirement from Rugby – Rugby News
The South African Rugby Union provincial and Super Rugby outfit, Vodacom Bulls and Blue Bulls have confirmed the retirement of the their utility front row forward Derrick Derick Kuün.
Derick Kuün announced his immediate retirement from the rugby on Wednesday, August 24. The news came as a surprise for the most, as no one was expecting a sudden sidelining of the former Springboks
international flanker.
Kuün has cited the business reasons as the main reason to say goodbye to the Rugby. He will join his rest of the family in their farming business at Balfour. He said, “It is with a heavy heart
that I announce my retirement, but a couple of business opportunities came along and I have to act on them immediately. I will join a family business.”
Kuün was representing the Bulls side in the ongoing 2011 ABSA Currie Cup tournament. Couple of weeks back he made his record 100th appearance for his provincial side. He was part
of the team, which won the Super Rugby titles three times in 2007, 2009 and 2010. He was also part of the club’s outfit, which lifted the Currie Cup and Vodacom Cup titles.
The 27-year-old Kuün has thanked the fans, club management, coaching staff and players for their support and love. He added that he has learnt many things during his stay at the club, and
enjoyed some of the happiest moments here.
Speaking about the management, Kuün said, “I would like to thank the union and company for the opportunity of being part of the Blue Bulls and Bulls family for nine years of my life. I appreciate
the amount of time that was invested in me from management level.”
Kuün acknowledged it was very hard decision to leave his teammates with whom he has developed a special bond. Commenting on the fans support, he said, “Your support is very important and there
is no greater feeling running out to a packed Loftus Versfeld. My blood will always be Blue.”
The Johannesburg born Kuün made his professional Rugby Union career debut for the Blue Bulls in 2004 season. As mentioned earlier he has made 100 appearances for the Bulls and has scored 160
points for them.
The utility forward Kuün has played at both flanker and hooker positions for the Bulls. He made his Super Rugby debut for Bulls against the Sharks during the 2007 Super Rugby competition.
He so far has made 68 Super Rugby appearances for the Bulls and has scored 40 points for them.
Blue Bulls Company (Pty) Ltd, Heyneke Meyer has expressed his disappointment on sudden loss of his star player. He has praised the game skills and leadership capabilities of the Kuün.
On behalf of the club, Meyer has expressed his best wishes for the Kuün, his family and for his future endevours.
