Bundesliga: Bayern Munich vs. SC Freiburg, The Pressure is on Munich
Freiburg have not won a single match in their last eleven fixtures as they prepare to take on a Bayern Munich side that has not lost since September. However the Freiburg coach Robin Dutt was hopeful while talking to reporters in the pre
match press conference. He told reporters, “My task is now to stand up again and start over. There is no better opponent than Bayern Munich for that. We are crazy enough to believe that we can get something in Munich.”
Bayern Munich, despite not having lost since September have not been able to please their fans. The side remains at mid table at 11th place, nine matches into the new season. This would be considered a poor run
by a club defending the domestic title and the position of the European runner-ups. Their last fixture against Hamburg SV ended in a disappointing 0-0 draw, and manager Louis van Gaal admitted later that his uninspiring side was lucky to even earn a point
from that game.
Nonetheless, Munich are unbeaten in back to back matches in the Bundesliga, and four matches in all competitions. The champions will be looking to extend their unbeaten run as they are visited by under dogs SC Freiburg. An unbeaten run
to five matches is what van Gaal will be looking for today, he has already warned his team to start showing results or face the consequences. Sources reveal that there have been talks that Bayern Munich will be active in the upcoming January transfer window.
Some good news for Bayern as Philipp Lahm has invited the club to open talks over a new contract, the player’s current contract expires in the summer of 2012 and there was speculation over his future. He told reporters, “It is looking
very good at the moment. I am waiting on the board to make their move, for someone to approach me. I want to see that things are moving forward so that the club can progress. And I realize that they are.”
Christian Nerlinger told the media that negotiations could begin soon and confirmed that the club was eager to retain both Lahm and his national and club team-mate Bastian Schweinsteiger. Schweinsteiger’s contract expires soon and the
midfielder has been linked with Chelsea and Real Madrid. Nerlinger said, “We will do everything we can to keep them – preferably for their entire careers.”
