Bundesliga News: http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Per-Mertesacker-c29680 committed to Werder Bremen
German defender Per Mertesacker has pledged his allegiance to his current club Werder Bremen, stating that he won’t leave the club despite their struggling form this season, in the German Bundesliga.
The German giants, who finished 3rd in the league last season, have been a shadow of their former self this season, as the side is currently ranked 14th in the Bundesliga points table. Bremen have just managed 24 points from their 22
fixtures in the German top flight and things don’t seem to be improving for them. However, Mertesacker has chosen to remain loyal with the club and aims to help the side out of this slump in form.
Per joined Bremen five seasons ago in 2006 and his current contract runs out in the summer of 2012. The centre-back was linked to the Premier League in the January transfer window, with clubs like Arsenal and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 aiming to snap up the 26-year-old.
However, the player remained at Bremen to end all such speculations.
"You have to be going back to aspects like gratitude, respect and affinity. You have to keep in mind what a club has done for yourself over years, you should never forget that,” stated the defender.
The centre-back added that he would be able to cope with his club not playing in the Champions League next season, as Bremen have no chance of reaching the top 4 in the German League. The player refused to break the promises he made with Bremen when he joined
them while he was still young, and gave all the credit to the club for making him the player he is.
"Players moving clubs fast and often is a behaviour I deplore, I hate that. At the moment I am extremely keen to prevent any scenario of people being able to say I am a mercenary, only thinking about money,” added the 26-year-old.
Mertesacker believed that Werder Bremen was going through a tough time currently and he would, therefore, be cautious about making any statements that would hurt the club. He had no intensions to leave and was of the view that the players should back the
club rather than deserting it in their most desperate of times.
