Bungle Inthejungle surprises Morawij in Bet365 Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood
Mick Channon's 2-year-old, Bungle Inthejungle, upset Morawij after an exciting contest in the Group 3 Bet365 Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood on Tuesday, July 31st.
Trained by Roger Varian, Morawij earned the highest odds of 2 to 1, and the bookies were expecting him to dominate the proceedings. However, he completely failed to live up to his high reputation.
On the other hand, Bungle Inthejungle maintained the highest standards all the way through. Under Martin Harley, he was always prominent, and his furious speed made him uncatchable. He kept on very bravely inside the final furlong, and led in the dying moments
of the race.
As a result of a fine finish, the 14-1 chance secured the first place by a head’s distance. Morawij kept the leading runner under tremendous pressure, but could not grab the glory. Although he was unable to surpass the champion, Roger Varian’s charge secured
the runner-up spot by 3¾ lengths.
Hototo was third on the table. He kept on good to go third inside the last furlong, and stayed there until the end. Lyric Ace finished fourth, whereas Dylanbaru completed the order of five.
Expressing delight over guiding the son of Exceed And Excel to a shocking victory, the jockey said after the race:
"You can't really go fast enough for this lad, he sees out the five really well. He's a big horse and has plenty of speed. I didn't think I was going to peg him back until the last half-furlong, but he's tough, that's what you need in a horse - the heart
in the right place."
Channon added: "He's got blinding speed. I'm just relying on the jockeys to do the right thing and Martin played a blinder. I imagine we'll go down the Flying Childers route, but this has always been the plan."
On the other hand, Varian was slightly disappointed over Morawij’s defeat. The handler explained that the runner did nothing wrong, and it was just a matter of luck. Taking about the 2-year-old’s next appearance, he uttered that the Gimcrack Stakes at York
is good option, as he wants to run his charge on quicker ground.
