Burke Badenhop’s eleventh inning run gives Florida Marlins 2-1 win over New York Mets – MLB Update
The Florida Marlins fought hard to overpower the New York Mets 2-1 in a scintillating game at Citi Field, New York on Monday, May 16.
Monday’s game faced an hour’s delay due to the thick mist. However, this temporary suspension in the game did not prove auspicious for the Mets as Burke Badenhop, who not only got his second career hit, but also gave the Marlins their tie-breaking and winning
run.
New York woes were compounded by a sudden fitness problem of David Wright who was discovered to have a stress fracture in the lower back. Similarly, Chris Young was afflicted by a shoulder injury.
The game had started on a positive note for New York because of the seven wins in the last ten games record they were on. Justin Turner was the first to open the account of the Mets in the fourth inning with his and the team’s first run.
Mike Pelfrey, kept throwing effective pitches that did not allow any Marlins’ hitters to break the 1-0 lead of New York. After throwing six scoreless innings, Pelfrey gave up three hits and one run in the seventh inning that not only ended the run drought
for the Marlins but also levelled the score.
The game then took an interesting turn where both the teams put in a concerted effort to break the tie. However, the game dragged on and continued up to the eleventh inning. Mike Dunn pitched right into the eighth inning for Florida to contain the Mets’
hitters. He managed to contain New York’s hitters quite effectively.
Francisco Rodriguez played his part for the Mets to keep the game tied in a hope that the Mets’ defence would break it. Nothing of that sort materialised up until the 11th inning when the Marlins turned the tide.
Badenhop, having had no hit since June 3, 2008, finally struck a much-needed blow in the 11th inning, allowing Mike Stanton to move forward with a run, to bring home a difficult 2-1 victory for the Marlins against New York.
