Question:

Burning an old flag?

I have an old flag from work here at home. I've been hesitant to send it on its way. Is today a good day to burn the old tattered girl? Is it respectful on this Independence day? I should add that this is only for retirement and not any sort of act of rebellion and that I have a nice clean fire pit in the backyard that would be a suitable and respectful place

  1. most definatly, as long as you do it in a respectful fashon, and hopefully you have a replacement. the best way to do it would be to fold it traditionaly, place it into the pit and then light the fire, and as you and your family watch it burn please remember all of those who have fallen and gave all to give you your freedoms. happy independence day! also if you have or can find a recording of "Taps" that would be very appropriate.

  2. Check the boy scout web site for the rules of flag retirement.

No throwing a flag away IS NOT the respectful thing to do.... can you imagine the image of a beaten up flag hanging out of a garbage truck?

Burning IS the proper thing and there are certain ways to do it... or just give to the boy scouts the local ones here take care of the old flags properly.

  3. How about instead of burning it you just throw it out.  Whether it is an act of rebellion or not, burning the flag for any reason is still disrespectful in my opinion.

  4. You can get ahold of your congressman or ward boss and ask him about the program by the government for properly disposing of American Flags.

  5. I don't see why you shouldn't burn a flag.  Seriously, people have suffered heavier penalties for flag burning than like stealing its stupid.  I know America stresses patriotism, but patriotism shouldn't be the law.

  6. Yes, this would be a good day. cut the "field" or blu part with the stars out. then cut the stripes out individually. Remember to burn the field first and cut out the metal rings. Today would be the best day poosible to retire a flag!Being in the boy scouts of America has taught me many skills including retiring a flag.

  7. I don't think it's disrespectful to burn the old flag today.
