The publisher announces a number of titles that will not be supported, despite the fact that a number of them had an Online Pass requirement.
The gaming world is one where if a game makes it, it is fondly remembered by gamers for many years and if it does not then it is forgotten as fast as Fernando Torres’s ability to score a goal in the Barclays Premier League.
However, over time, as new games come in people do not have as much time as they once had for older titles and the number of people playing those games begins to decline. We apologize for pointing out the obvious but it seemed necessary.
As games are frequented less often the publisher begins to do a cost-benefit analysis as to how long it would be profitable to maintain support for a game. Once the cost exceeds the returns the support is withdrawn.
EA recently released a list of games for which it would withdraw support for in the future and released a statement as well. The games to lose server support are Burnout Revenge, Need for Speed ProStreet, FIFA 10, The Godfather 2, EA Sports Active, EA Create
and Spare Parts.
The statement released read, “As games get replaced with newer titles, the number of players still enjoying the older games dwindles to a level – fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles – where it’s no longer feasible to continue the
behind-the-scenes work involved with keeping these games up and running.”
The statement went on to state how the publisher would rather focus their attention on providing better experiences for titles that gamers are currently playing instead of supporting those that gamers aren’t.
It read, “We would rather our hard-working engineering and IT staff focus on keeping a positive experience for the other 99% of customers playing our more popular games.”
It is hard to argue against EA from that standpoint and to be fair one has to ask themselves when was the last time they bothered playing any of the games on the list and if they would rather have better service on the current games they are playing?
