I've been on a swim team since '05, so I'm in pretty good shape. I'm not the fastest on my team- but I'm pretty fast. Haha. Anyways- I'm going into 9th grade next year, and they're training me to be on the Varsity team. I have pratice nine teams a week. I've never ever praticed this much before, plus we're starting to do dry land twice a week. Latly I've been feeling really sore and tired. Not able to do anything but sit there. Am I working toO hard? Will this ever go away? Any other tips? Thanks!

  1. it'll go away as times go by and your body gets accustomed to the increase in workload, nine teams a week is pretty decent so just make sure you get enough sleep and eat right.

    good luck

edit: on sunshine's answer, you should go to the am workout on the meet day, because once youre at championships there's no am workout you'll race at a higher level

  2. Hey! I am in the same situation as you and I have been a competitive swimmer for 5 years.

Like you, I have been going to 9 practices every week and got really tired for the high school season!(luckily it is over now XD) But this is what I do

on the days before the meet: 1) don't go to the morning workout and just go to the swim meet. that way you should be less tired for the meet and have more energy to compete.

    2) go to bed earlier. It really helps energize me up and make me less tired, but don't suddenly get a lot of sleep because you could feel even more tired!

    * yes, you would eventually get used to it, but I still suggest you to get more rest, eat lots of healthy food so that your body will be stronger. It is really really tiring like you mentioned at first. I totally agree on that. But if you over work your body, it's not good for your health and you may get sick/etc. try talking to your coach/ parents etc. to see if you can take any breaks.

    Good luck in swimming! <3

  3. Take a break, and do some other types of exercises, for a while. You can go back to swiming later .

  4. at my school team we are not allowed to have practice seven days in a row so i think that you are working too hard.  with that much work how are you going to do anything else?  my advice is to just make sure you stretch well before your workouts and cool down and stretch after.  that should make it less painful after the practice.

  5. Sounds to me like you are burning yourself out. Try to take a break for awhile.

  6. It sounds like you are not used to exercising to that level but if you are really tired and sore i would make sure you are eating the proper food (protein, carbohydrates, etc) and getting enough rest before each practice and stay hydrated.  But if you are getting tired of practicing that many times take a break for the intense group and swim pre competitively for a while. you will still be swimming but not nearly as much or to the extent of a varsity level practice.
