Burnside Skatepark collaborate with Burnside Brewing Company to introduce custom beer
Skateboard and beer may sound like an odd combination, but the shot-callers of Burnside Skatepark in Portland, Oregon, have decided to form a link between the two by inspiring the founders of Burnside Brewing Company to whip up a special batch of custom
beer for the alcohol lovers across the country.
The management of Burnside had been in talks with the management of the brewing company for the past few weeks and it was only recently that their negotiation materialised, allowing the operation process for the brewing of the new beer to get underway.
For many, it would be a bit confusing to understand how any of this would benefit the park of skateboarding community. Sage Bolyard, who is one of Burnside’s pioneers, explained that they have an emotional attachment with Burnside Brewing Company. However,
he admitted that the details regarding the type of beer and the graphics for the bottle has not been finalised yet, though the meetings were taking place with the management of the brewery and things were going smoothly so far.
Jay Gilbert, one of the owners of Burnside Brewing Company, shared the stance of the company with a reporter from the leading news network. According to him, "It's something we're all interested in doing. Now we're in the process of wracking our brains for
a beer style and doing some test batches. We're thinking something more aggressive, with a higher alcohol content and a full-hop style. And we're hoping by spring to get label approval to sell 22-ounce bottles in and around Portland at first, with [wider distribution
after that].”
According to Gilbert, the skatepark will benefit from the launch of the custom beer as the company plans on utilising a portion of the profit earned through the sale of the beer for concrete patching and maintaining the park. The intended motivation is to
ensure that the park is well maintained and serves its purpose for at least another 21 years.
Burnside Skatepark, which celebrated its 21st anniversary on Halloween night last month, was created without the permission of the city council, but was eventually granted an approval as a public skatepark. It has been featured in the popular
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater franchise, as well as the Hollywood film Free Willy and Paranoid Park.
