Question:

Burnt Hair from Straightening?

by  |  earlier

Ok so I straighten my hair a lot. However, when I straighten it (even on the lowest heat setting) it smokes a little and it gives off a bit of an odor for a moment. However, my hair is shiny, soft and healthy looking with no split ends. Am I burning my hair or is there another explanation for why my hair is smoking? This has been going on for a while now.

  1. my hair does that too, even when i get it straightened at like a salon. im pretty sure its normal. i think it might just be from putting lots of product in my hair for straightening and it makes smoke when i straighten it.

  2. My hair does that too that means it working and the smell idk yy it does that but its the same for me. you only need to worry if ur hair starts to dry out and if it starts getting split ends that means its burning.

  3. do you use some product to straighten your hair? Such as a straightening spray? sometimes, those products tend to "steam" (sounds better than smoke) as they evaporate from your hair. I straighten my hair all the time and I've noticed that too. :)

  4. It could be the water in the oil in your hair or it could be from your hair being damp (it's steam, not smoke)

Also if you have product in your hair then the product will smell bad when heated up.

I don't use product and I straighten only when my hair is completely dry and I still get a small amount of steam. As long as your using a good quality straightener you'll be fine. A straightener like a GHD or something with a similar design is actually pretty good for your hair; helps control split ends, keeps hair dye from fading and increases the time between washes while keeping your hair soft.

  5. its the oil i your hair

try washing your hair more often

  6. Do you put product in your hair first? If so, the smoothing/ protecting or styling product will usually evaporate during the straightening, which will leave in a puff of steam and a slight smell to it.

  7. Yeah your def burning it! Mine done the same thing. Make sure your hair is dry when your straightening it. I would give your hair a break for a little bit and get a straightening shampoo!

    Good Luck! :)

  8. If your hair is damp, even just a little, it may just be steam.

Just be sure to use a protection serum when you straighten it.

And give your hair a break when your not going out.

I used to straighten mine everyday, and I ruined it completely. Had to chop it off and grow it out naturally.

    So be careful. =/

  9. its totally normal for your hair to smoke and for the smell, and your lucky you dont get split ends :P

  10. Your hair is most likely smoking because it is coming in contact with wet strands of hair. Heat + water = steam.

If your hair is healthy, you're not burning it. Just make sure you use a product to protect it (chi is great) and make sure your hair is completely dry first.

  11. What you smell is proabaly respdue on the curling iron from hair products rather than your hair. It builds up on the iron and you have to clean it occassionally.

  12. If your hair is wet or damp, it will do that. It's at it's weakest when it's wet and to apply that kind of heat to it just fries it. Also, you really should use a heat protectant spray on your hair before using the flat iron on it.

  13. well is ur hair still wet? or is it dry....if its wet then straighten ur hair when is dry duhhh....but yea ur always burnin ur hair hello its hot

  14. Buy yourself heat defence for you hair, you can get them from everywhere even your local supermarket. hairdressers when they go to straighten peoples hair they put heat defence on the hair, they mostly use the moose type but u can get them in all sorts of way like spray, moose even like a oily liquid. that protects you hair from the heat of the hair straightened, if you don't have that then it will burn your hair. it's actually called steam not smoke, if it doesn't steam then it means the heat defence product isn't good and you need to get a better brand, my tip to you is buy the heat defence products from you hair salon it's the best for your hair because it's soft on you hair and it protects it from the heat. oh and the smell is normal aswell.

  15. if your hair is smoking use aquage beyond shine it helps keep your hair healthy.

    p.s  your hairs not burning

  16. well was ur hair a slight wet if sooo thats why and if its dry then i wouldnt worrie if its healthy then ur not burning it

  17. Mine does the same thing. Its not great to straighten your hair every day, so try to have some other styles and use a good conditioner. A good straightener will smoke and smell though.

  18. Well to me it sounds like it's healthy. Don't worry about it all straighteners smell like something is burning once you start it. I hate it when mine does it! But I would recommend using this before you straighten it. When you use it do not soak your hair. Just little spritz around your hair! And I don't recommend at all straightening it right out of the shower. Keep in mind that water and electricity don't mix!

  19. Yes you are burning it!

  20. use a heat protecter spray

  21. My hair does that sometimes (I am a guy)

Mabey ur hair is a little wet. If it is even the slightest bit damp it will smoke from the water. If your hair has been colored it some times creates a smell when the dye gets burnt. Hope that helped.

  22. do you have a new/slightly new straightner?

cause most often on new straightners have a clear protective coating on them that burns off with each use..that could be the odor(always happens when i get a new one) and it could also be a "steam" straightner.
