Burroughs boys volleyball team loses to Valley Christian of Cerritos by 3-1 on Saturday
Burroughs boys volleyball team could not fulfil their dreams of taking home the champion’s title of the Southern Section Div. III tournament.
Had the Burroughs been able to accomplish the win over Valley Christian of Cerritos, it would have been the first time ever that any team from the Burroughs’s school experienced a Southern Section win.
By the time that Valley Christian had started filling the gym at Cypress College with their loud cheers of joy while the Burroughs were heading out of the court with heavy hearts, the score board displayed the following final set scores that cut the Valley
Christian success story short, 27-25, 25-27, 25-18 and 25-16.
With losing the final, the Burroughs boys brought their 17 match long winning streak to an end. Despite the loss, the overall performance statistics of the number one ranked Burroughs are far better than that of the number two ranked Valley Christian. The
number of times that the Burroughs have bagged themselves a win total to be 33 in all. These victories have been accomplished at the cost of undergoing a commendably low number of losses that amount to be only four. In contrast, Valley Christian has tallied
wins that total to be 29 so far. These victories have been achieved at the cost of suffering losses that tally to be four in all.
The first set of the game saw both the teams come out strong against each other. Neither the Crusaders nor the Burroughs let the other take the lead for a long time. The opening set of the game was so intense that it saw a total of 17 ties along with four
lead changes. However, the initial set ended with the Crusaders bagging it at 27-25.
Losing the first set made the Burroughs fight strongly in the second set of the game. They were able to rally together and step up their game in order to give the Crusaders a tough time. The increased effort from the Crusaders side enabled them to win the
second set at 27-25.
However, this was the only win that the Burroughs were able to manage as the next two sets were taken by the Crusaders at 25-18 and 25-16 respectively.
At the end of the match, the Burrough’s Coach Joel Brinton expressed his disappointment with the outcome of the event in the following words, “They came out doing everything we asked of them the first two games, which is why they were so close. (The last
two games) I haven't seen us play like that in our 37 matches. We just kind of shut down emotionally out there and just kind of died in that third game. And then we tried to get ourselves fired back up after that, but (Valley Christian) just took all the momentum.
Why it happened, I don't know. I can't figure that out.”
