Burrow, Florence and Smith through to Round 4 of Volcom Fiji Pro – Surfing news
Australia’s Taj Burrow, Hawaii’s John John Florence and South Africa’s Jordy Smith walked away with the win from their respective Round 3 heats at Volcom Fiji Pro, the fourth of ten stops on the 2013 Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) World Championship
Tour, which continued at secondary event site of Restaurants in Tavarua, Fiji, on Thursday, June 6, 2013.
The barrelling conditions on offer at Restaurants created a perfect canvas for the world’s top surfing talent to display their stylish and exquisite skills at. The huge crowd in attendance expected themselves to be treated to nothing less a series of sensational
performances.
The latest day’s proceedings continued with Burrow taking on Hawaii’s Fredrick Patacchia in the opening heat of Round 3.
The Australian surfer made use of his experience to navigate through the four-to-six foot barrels and search for the perfect waves to execute his manoeuvres.
Scoring a 9.43 off his first business-wave and backing it up with an 8.67-point ride, the Australian surfer finished with a heat-total of 18.10 points.
Patacchia responded with a heat-total of 12.33 points, which comprised of a 7.33 and 5.00-point ride. The inadequate score resulted in his defeat and thus elimination from the competition.
The second heat pitted Florence against America’s Damien Hobgood in a man-on-man battle for the Round 4 spot.
The 20-year-old Florence had stunned the crowd earlier in the day with a near-perfect performance and successfully kept the momentum going in his latest contest.
Florence collected an 8.93 off his first business-wave and backed it up with a 7.17-point ride to register a decisive heat-total of 16.10 points.
Hobgood had been impressive on the first day of the competition, but ended up falling just short of beating his Hawaiian rival’s score, finishing with a heat-total of 16.06 points. Despite an impressive performance and a response that nearly got him across
the line, he was forced to make a premature exit from the competition.
Smith locked horns with Australia’s Kieren Perrow in the third heat of Round 3, surely feeling more confident after his solid Round 2 performance earlier in the day.
The South African surfer asserted his dominance over his Australian rival from the onset of the heat, collecting a couple of nine-point rides to register a heat-total of 18.30 points.
Perrow scored a 7.70 off his first business-wave and went on to add an additional 7.00 to his account, thus finishing with a heat-total of 14.70 points. As a result, he was forced to surrender the Round 4 spot to his rival.
