This is not so easy by public transportation. There isn't a train station in either town. Sant'Angelo is a small town with a population of less than 1000. You can drive in a little over 90 minutes from Amalfi, but the bus routes are much longer because there isn't a direct bus connection over the mountain between Amalfi and Avellino.

From Amalfi, you can take the SITA bus to Salerno and change to a bus to Avellino: http://www.sitabus.it/wps/portal/orarica... The schedule for Amalfi to Salerno is at the link to Quadro 15. The schedule for Salerno to Avellino is at the link to Quadro 1.

There's a bus schedule here for Avellino to Sant'Angelo all'Esca (7 buses during the day): http://www.air-spa.it/daAV.htm

As an alternative, you could take a boat or bus to Naples, take the train to Avellino, and then catch the bus to Sant'Angelo.

Personally, I would rent a car for the day and drive. Driving in that area can be an exciting experience, but it really isn't all that bad. You can use this site for route planning: http://www.viamichelin.com/viamichelin/g...
