As for buses, local and limited-stops buses cost $2.  Express buses cost $5.

A seven-day MetroCard costs $25.  This is good on local/limited buses, the subway, the Staten Island Railway, and Long Island Buses.

Unlimited-ride cards such as the one-day, the seven-day, and the 30-day are NOT valid on PATH, the AirTrain, or express buses.  Pay-per-ride MetroCard IS valid on those.  Still, the unlimited-ride cards are a GREAT value.

If you choose not to buy a MetroCard (though you should use one), you can pay for your bus ride in coins, exact change only.  You may not use pennies (one-cent coins) or half-dollar coins.  All other coins, including dollar coins, are accepted.  If you pay in coins, you can ask the driver for a transfer, which you can use on another bus within two hours.  This is NOT valid on the subway, and you MUST pay with MetroCard on the subway.

MetroCard gives you free bus-to-bus, subway-to-bus, and bus-to-subway transfers, which is another reason to use it.

the bus is $2.00, although you need to have correct change/coins (no dollar bills) otherwise, you can use your metro card (you can get one of those unlimited metro cards in the subway stations for a day, week, month, etc.) or if you have a card with a certain amount of money on it, then it will deduct $2.00 from your card.

$2.00 a ride.  I usually buy a metrocard in advance, if not, then I use quarters. uhh pain in the butt taking buses and stuff but alot better than any other state
