Busanan Ongbumrungpan defeats Lydia Li Ya Cheah in the qualifying round of Thailand Open GP Gold
Thailand’s shuttler, Busanan Ongbumrungpan, overwhelmed Lydia Li Ya Cheah of Malaysia, in the Women’s Singles qualifying round of the Thailand Open GP Gold 2011, at Bangkok, Thailand, on Tuesday, June 7.
Busanan stunned everyone by playing top quality badminton against the experienced Malaysian, who could not play well against the local opponent. The Thai worked hard for 52 minutes to thrash Lydia in a thrilling rubber-set fight.
In the starting set of the match, Busanan employed fast pushes to build pressure on the Malaysian, who was not playing well in the first part of the game. The Thai shuttler, who was moving around in the court with considerable ease, managed a two-point lead
at the end of the first half.
Lydia, who is currently world number 140, accelerated her speed and eventually levelled the score by playing a relatively better game. Busanan made some mistakes at the crucial stage of the game and lost the first set to the Malaysian by a decent difference
of 18-21, in 20 minutes.
However, Busanan bounced back in the second set and surprised everyone by playing a top quality game against Lydia, who failed to continue her winning run in the second set of the match. The reflexes of Busanan were remarkable as she took minimum amount
of time to return to the base line from all areas of the court.
The local shuttler spared no chance for Lydia to find her momentum and make a comeback in the second set. Busanan finished up the second game in just 15 minutes by a difference of 21-12.
The third set was an interesting fight between the two shuttlers as they were playing at the highest speed. The crowd could not have asked for a better fight as both players were employing every tactic they had in their arsenal, to dominate the game.
At the concluding phase of the deciding set, Busanan managed to play a better game and she clinched the set by a 21-17 margin, in 17 minutes. The 52-minute battle ended in three sets and the final scores were; 18-21, 21-12 and 21-17.
