I am going to be selling advertisment ads on my webpage. Do I need a business license to do that, or just report the income on my taxes with detailed records? Also there will EVENTUALLY be some items sold online but I know I need a license for that. But for the initial ad space, do I require one?

  1. You can choose to do whatever you like, but running a business usually requires a business license.

Talk to your CITY about their requirements.

  2. Yes, you should get a business license. You are in business. It is just a matter of doing the business online, rather than at a retail location. This adds legitimacy to your business.  Some people check to see if person is licensed, before buying.

  3. It depends on your county

In most counties, all you need is to register your business. Business registration process includes filing your DBA or fictitious business name or doing business as (if using a business name other than your given name)

Business registration is different from business licensing. Licensing is typically for businesses such as contractors, daycares, etc. but not for creating a website or blog and earning from advertising

But go to your county clerk's office and inquire as to the process and requirements for starting your business
