Question:

Business leaders pushing for global warming action?

"Nothing less than a rapid and fundamental strategy to reach a low-carbon world economy is needed," said the proposal, which was backed by 99 CEOs of global companies.

The business group also called for encouragement of all clean technologies, long-term policies to provide a stable investment climate, and products and services to adapt to changes caused by rising temperatures.

Will this kind of support from the business sector help motivate elected officials and the public?

  1. There are other groups like this.  Check out this one, and note the impressive list of companies.

I would say more influential in the US would be the recent finding from the national intelligence agencies that man made global warming is a danger to nationa security.  And from the Centers for Disease Control that man made global warming is a public health threat.  And from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration that man made global warming will cause more devastating storms.

Those things affect people more directly.

By the way, the list in the answer above are the professional "skeptics", a conglomeration of people tied to the fossil fuel industry, retired scientists who have just gotten too old for anything new, and people with no relevant expertise.  This list, and the government organizations above, are vastly more credible:

EVERY major scientific organization has issued an official statement that this is real, and mostly caused by us.  The National Academy of Sciences, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the American Institute of Physics, the American Chemical Society, the American Geophysical Union, the American Meteorological Association, etc.

The only people who would accept the list of random people cited in the answer above instead of these groups, are those determined to deny global warming, no matter what.  They're much like the people who still, against all scientific evidence, say the Earth is 6000 years old, or that NASA faked the moon landings.  They have their people that they follow, and facts don't sway them.

  2. No, because the reason for government inaction is the lack of proof of AGW.  The know that the measures suggested by the greenies to fight AGW will have severe economic repercussions.  Here is a list of experts who do not agree with the AGW, which is a lot more credible than the list of business leaders.

  3. I hope not.  To begin with...what do they mean by 'products and services to adapt to changes caused by rising temperatures'?  If they studied climate over the past ten years to even a short-minded level, they would know that there have been no increases in temps. since 1998.  So their premise is a fraud.

It appears this is just another case of more leftist liars promoting untruths to cause confusion.  But after all, isn't that what the whole 'climate change' movement is built on?  Yes.

  4. "developed countries should take the lead in the battle against global warming and push for halving global emissions of greenhouse gases by 2050, a group of business leaders said Friday."

Since developing nations are responsible for half of all emissions now and due to growth and a complete lack of limits or targets will have the vast majority of emissions by 2050, the claim that developed nations leading the way could possibly reduce global emissions 50% seems like pure fantasy.

Developing nations claim they "need" more coal powerr plants (China alone is building 500+), so their emissions will double by 2050.  If developed nations cut their emissions by 100% to zero by then, global emissions will be the same as today, and the planet will continue warming.  At the moment no one is even discussing a scenario that favorable, so why the public press session to play "make believe"?

For "business leaders" these people seem to be challeneged by simple math.  They can "push for" whatever they want, but until they choose to stop manufacturing goods in developing nations (fueling economic and population growth there), we're screwed.  Developed nations can "lead the way" but the participation of developing nations is the key to our eventual success or failure.

This entire group of "business leaders" probably has far less influence than Wal-Mart.  If Wal-Mart alone required all of their manufacturers to use increasing percentages of clean power and to have carbon and soot reduction and mitigation plans, China would have to change its pending power plant designs.  Boycott Wal-Mart until they choose a less damaging role and they issue standards for their suppliers.

  5. Multinationals are all for this because it puts local businesses out of business.  Don't forget local businesses and what they have to say about it--they can't afford to retrofit their buildings, buy carbon offsets, pay more taxes, etc.  And they're not getting handouts and bailouts like the big corporations get.  This will give multinationals even more of a monopoly and we'll be just like Chile and Argentina--runaway inflation, no local businesses, no middle class, high prices and low wages (because of no competition), etc.
