Question:

Business name contain city name legally?

I want to start a sole proprietorship and maybe do a DBA (doing business as) name, but I would like to have the name of my city/town that I live in apart of the name of the business.

For example, I want to start a computer business in the city Roanoke. Could I register the business "Roanoke Computer Services" as long as no one else has the name and not get into trouble with the city?

  1. I would not have thought that that would be a problem as you are helping to publicise the town. Why not approach the town planning group and seek their advice. Good luck with the business.

  2. Yes you can use the name if available. You need to go to the city hall where your business will be based to file for a business license anyway, they will tell you the guidelines, the cost for the license will usually be under $75. Next you will need to go to a bank of your choice to open a business checking account, they will advise what is needed, you will usually need to place a add in a local paper with your purposed dba name to see if there will be any objections.
