Busted batteries, can the object still work if cleaned?

i have an AT&T 882 2-Line Personal Information Center with Caller ID and it has a power cord in addition it needs 4 batteries, the phone was new but it looks like it may have been stored because the batteries that were in burst and it has all that crusty white stuff in it and the phone's info center works when you plug in the cord but the actual phone/dial tone doesn't work without batteries - can this be fixed with a cleaning or is this phone no good anymore

You idiot don't you know what is in BATTERIES? Well ACID no product can not be used the acid from the batteries may have cause extended damage trash it and buy a new one.
