  1. Since the State Department doesn't understand how to process Passport applications in a timely manner it has waved the requirement for American citizens to have passports, but proof of application is required to come to the USA by land.  The yahoo who said that Americans and Canadians don't need passports and Mexicans do is obviously delusional.  The requirement is that everyone entering the USA requires a passport with the exception noted above.


  2. At this point in time, US/Canadian citizens who wish to cross into the US by land must present a government-issued photo ID, such as a driver’s license, plus proof of citizenship, such as a birth certificate.  The passport requirement* in place for air travelers has not yet been implemented for land border crossers.

    *As of 01/23/07, all persons, including US citizens, traveling by air between the US and Canada, Mexico, Bermuda, and the Caribbean region are required to present a passport or other valid travel document to enter or re-enter the United States.
