Butch Davis says UNC needs to monitor players more closely
North Carolina head coach Butch Davis has said that the university needs to monitors its college football players more closely, in order to find out who they are spending their time with and whether or not they are not breaking any NCAA rules.
The Tar Heels football team has been ravaged by NCAA investigation throughout the summer and into the season. The club has 10 players who are currently under the investigation of the governing body. Moreover, the club also just had two players suspended for
receiving improper benefits.
Some of the players currently under investigation by the NCAA are Marvin Austin, who is currently out of the line-up indefinitely for having broken team rules, defensive player Robert Quinn, wide receiver Greg Little, and running back Ryan Houston. In addition,
Deunta Williams was suspended for four games and cornerback Kendric Burney was suspended for six.
The problems are almost exclusively related to players receiving gifts from agents before they have signed, or informed their athletic director they have signed with them. If a player is to receive a gift before he has informed the university, the NCAA deems
it an improper benefit.
Davis reflected on the wide-scale investigation and suspensions, saying, “After looking back at it, certainly I’m going to take the responsibility that if there are ways I can help make sure these things don’t ever happen again, we’re clearly going to [do that]
in all the areas.”
The Tar Heels have struggled this season because of the loss of those 12 players. Originally thought to be one of football’s top teams coming into the 2010 season, North Carolina has struggled to a 0-2 record with losses to Louisiana State and Georgia Tech.
The club has a match against 2-0 Rutgers this weekend and will once again struggle to field a top flight line-up.
