Question:

Butterfly Flip Turn?

I've been on a swim team for about 2 years now. My main events were backstroke and freestyle and I totally dominated in them. My coach saw me practicing my strokes with my brother (who is a lifeguard at my swim team's pool) and said that my butterfly had great potential.

I hate doing butterfly but if my coach said it has potential then I guess I have to start liking it. So my question is how do you do a butterfly flip turn? I've been watching the olympics but they do it too fast.

thanks!!

  1. There is no "flip" allowed in butterfly. A "flip turn" implies that there is no hand touch -- just touching with the feet. Hand touches are required for both breaststroke and butterfly, therefore you need to do an "open turn" for both of these strokes.

Touch the wall with both hands simultaneously. Pick one side (either left or right) to pivot on. Right after you touch, draw your "pivot side" hand in to your chest and while you initiate a spin with the other hand (still leaning on the wall).

You can go here to watch videos about open turns.

  2. You don't flip in fly.

You touch the wall with two hands, if you are right handed you will turn to the right, if you are left handed you will turn to the left. Your dominate hand will be a bit lower. Then you will jab that lower arm's elbow back, stretch it out and twist as you push your other hand behind your ear in front of you. Push off and you're done!

  3. there is no flip turn to it i know a fast way to turn when u get to the wall drop ur left arm back and act like ur answering the phone with ur right arm.

  4. I'm on the swim team too! and I'm also a butterflyer.

the butterfly turn is just like the breaststroke turn.you have to touch the wall with two hand and then you drop either you left or right hand down and then bring the other one over you head by your ear.

we use this saying. elbow your brother. call your mother.

the video below the guy explains things really well and he does a bunch of other swim videos.

    hope this helps.

    good luck!

  5. You do an open turn: Grab the wall with one hand, (I'm pretty sure it's just one if, obviously, if not both) pull yourself to the wall and stream line off of it, It's quite simple.

  6. u dont flip on ur turn .. but a butterfly turn u touch with 2 hands, bring ur knees straight up to the wall as fast a possible,, then lean back bring ur less dominated hand straight by ur side, and more dominat hand by ur ear and stream line off as hard as possible.. the do at least 2-4 dolphin kicks off the wall then on ur first stroke DONT BREATHE.. but u can do it on the next stroke
