  1. to tag along to Maria B's answer...you can make sunbeam catchers in the shapes and colors of your choice.  Draw/stencil butterfly shape onto white poster board...outline sections to hole-punch out (small motor)...use colored tissue paper scraps to cover cut/punched out sections, glue well, let dry.

Attach twisted pipe-cleaner antennae to "head", use thin thread, yarn, paperclips or fishing line to hang.  Suspend all in windows of classroom to see the Butterflies dance.

Imagine how bright their mornings will be when the sunlight reflects in their own room!

You can also use same technique for "fishing" summer game (we added small magnets for 'catching' (count how many caught) or

"bobbing" for apples/pumpkins in sept/oct, turkeys in nov. and candles or ornaments in dec; snowflakes, stars, hearts, sunshines. pots o'gold, kites, easter eggs/baskets, school buses (windows) mosaics, and so on and so on....

  2. GAME: Caterpillars and Butteflies

    Game: Caterpillars and Butterflies

Materials: A circular mat to sit round, a

large model butterfly suitable for the children to hold.

Description: Sit together in a circle and recite and act out the poem Fuzzy Wuzzy Caterpillar. At the end choose one person to get up and fly round the circle holding the butterfly model.

    Fuzzy wuzzy, creepy crawly

    Caterpillar funny,

    You will be a butterfly

    When the days are sunny.

    Winging, flinging, dancing, springing

    Butterfly so yellow,

    You were once a caterpillar,

    Wiggly, wiggly fellow

    Little fuzzy caterpillar

    In your warm cocoon

The cold winter's over and you'll be hatching soon.

    Then you'll spread your wings

    On a warm summer's day

And wave us all good bye

    As you fly, fly away.

  3. maybe you should teach them about what their lifetime is.. and how they grow... what they eat.. what enviornment they live in...how to grow one yourself.. AND JUST FACTS!!

  4. The Hungry Caterpillar is a good book, you could pair that with retelling and maybe a game or interactive bulletin board.  Teach the kids each stage from caterpillar to butterfly.  Get a Live Butterfly Pavillion so they can see each stage and watch the caterpillars become butterflies.  You can order the caterpillars online (you may have to time this right).  You could teach symmetry with art- fold paper, then unfold, make half of the butterfly with paint, then fold the paper again to get the same paint design on the other half of the paper.  Or give them a black outline of the butterfly and have them glue geometric shapes on each side.  You could give them a diagram of a butterfly and have them match the labels to each part.  Depending on how long you have for the project, you may want to dedicate one day to each stage of the butterfly's development.
