  1. Good question.  Early in 2007 I read "Bio-Butanol, a sugar beet crop-based fuel that is to be commercialized later in 2007 by DuPont and BP, is an inherently better fuel {than ethanol} because, unlike ethanol, it has as much energy for each gallon as gasoline does."  It is also compatible with current pipelines and pumps and can be used in existing vehicles.  Could it be since sugar beets are a food crop, if too much was used for fuel, the price would rise too much to make a profit on it?

To answer that question somewhat:  It is also being made by a Pasadena, Calif start up company called GEVO.  Funding comes from Richard Branson's Virgin Group and well-known venture capitalist firm Khosla Ventures.  Their biobutanol is made using genetically modified micro-organisms acting on sugar cane, corn byproducts, grasses and other biomass items.

So that should take care of the food crop problem.

I hope lots of people will call or write DuPont, BP and CEVO and ask "What's the story?"

  2. Does it come from corn?   Ethanol is a scam to buy votes from the corn growing states, that's all.
