Buy a generator?

Question

i am looking for a generator.

i need to power a window air conditioner, a cable modem, a vonage router and a laptop. Thats all.

How much will one cost and what kind should I buy?

If you research generators online you will come across charts that help you figure out how much power you will need from one.  An air conditioner sucks a heck of a lot of juice, and that will be the major factor in the size of any generator.

Generators are also loud and they are powered by gasoline or some other fuel which you have to supply.  I have never heard of anyone buying a generator to basically run an air conditioner, but I guess it could happen.  I'm not sure if the power produced is consistent enough to not burn out an air conditioning unit, and maybe someone else here will have that knowledge for you.

Capacity of the generator you need is dependent on the BTU rating of your air conditioner. Other items are very minor and insignificant. As an example, if you have a 10,000 BTU air conditioner, absolute minimum generator would be about 3kw rating. I prefer Honda generators. They are reliable and seem to run quieter than other brands.
