Question:

Buy new (customized) golf clubs first, or learn swing first?

I am very new at golfing. I've been to the driving range maybe 7 to 8 times at the most. I've never been to a golf course. The set of clubs I am using are my dad's old clubs, and let's just say they have seen better days.

My question is, is it worth it to go get customized golf clubs now? I know part of the customization process is analyzing your golf swing, swing speed, and even ball address.

So what if my swing changes as I improve over time? Will that nullify the customization of the clubs? Will I have to get them re-customized if my swing changes drastically? Or should I get a solid consistent swing before trying to get the clubs customized?

  1. It depends.  If you think golf is a game your hooked on and will play for the rest of your life or is it a fad that you will no longer stick with after a month or so.  The cheapest boxed set you can get at walmart, sams club etc. would certainly be better than a set that is 10 years old or older.  Golf club technology is sort of like computers, it goes fast.  If you think you are going to stick with the game, maybe get a set of irons that are fit more for your height, arm length, lie angle and such.  Chances are that the speed of your swing won't change much even if you start to get better with your mechanics.  Most drivers and fairway woods are not custom fitted as far as length and lie angle are concerned.  You should be able to get a decent set of irons custom fitted for about $500-$600 if you look at companies like Tour Edge.  Don't go buying a set of Callaway fusions for $1500 right off the bat.  Because you are a beginner, you should buy a high lofted inexpensive driver and not even worry about fairway woods at the moment because you probably won't him them well until you get more experience.  Hope it helps

  2. Look around the sports shops or private country club golf shops for a used set. Make sure they feel good when you swing them, that they are neither too heavy or too light.Learn to play the game with them. Then as you become more proficient you may think of customization. You have to be able to hit a golf ball with some degree of accuracy and have a consistent swing and experience. Remember it isn't the arrow that misses, it's the Indian.

  3. I agree. you need a golf swing more than you need clubs. You know, you don"t have to spend a fortune for customized clubs. Another thing: If the old clubs you have had new grips put on you would be amazed how different and "new" they wiould feel.

  4. I would definately go with a cheaper nice set when you are just starting out.  If you want a proline set of clubs that are customised to you, once you add a driver, putter, fairway woods, and wedges you could easily spend of 2 grand.  But if you just go with a basic package set from a store like academy or Play it again sports you can get a full set of clubs with the bag and all the clubs for under 200 dollars.  And most of this sets are of high quality and will last you until you know your swing and are good enough to spend all that money.

  5. Where you are now with the game, the club won't be a major factor on how goof you hit the ball.  You should either stick with your dad's old clubs, or get a set a cheap starter/beginner clubs first.  Custom fitted clubs are nice, expensive and won't do you any good at this time.

As you get better, and played a lot on the course, you'll get to feel the type of clubs you want, then start looking at different brands and setups of other clubs, settle on what you want, then get those custom fitted.  It would be a much wiser use of your money.
