Question:

Buy or lease DirecTV receiver?

I have directv now (I own the receiver) and want to upgrade to HD. If I order the new HD receiver from directv, it will cost $200 plus $5/month, there's a 2 year committment, and I have to ship it back when I cancel the service.

So, what's the difference between leasing a new receiver from directv or just buying one at Best Buy? If I buy one (like the HR-21), does the 2 year committment still apply? Will I still pay an extra $5/month? Will directv still come out and install the new dish for free?

  1. It doesn't matter who you get it from - you will pay $200 and $5/mo and have to send it back.  Contact directv for the install charges for the HD dish - the 2year commitment applies regardless of where you get the receiver(s).
